Description
It is thought that Lemon is a plant native to India. Over time it has been cultivated in various Mediterranean countries and in modern times has become a commercial crop for the state of California. The essential oil is produced from the rind of the lemon that is pressed to create a pale greeny yellow oil and according to one source, it takes 3000 of them to produce a kilo of essential oil.
Lemon essential oil has a variety of uses and wide range of therapeutic properties including varicose veins, cellulite, and water retention. It is used in applications that require an antiseptic and antibacterial and can be diffused into the air to help kill some types of airborne germs. It also stimulates the body’s defense system and like other citrus oils can stimulate the lymphatic system. Lemon essential oil can also help to stop bleeding, and as such has been used to treat nosebleeds.
Lemon essential oil should be avoided during pregnancy and is phototoxic, meaning that it makes the skin sensitive to ultra violet rays. It can also be irritating to the skin so should be mixed with a carrier oil when used topically.
